Japan and Father Thani Nayagam

Abstract

Tamils are known for their universal outlook, exemplified by the phrase "Every town is our own, everyone is our kin" (). Therefore, travel is a sweet experience in human life. People derive immense joy from going to new places, meeting new people, and visiting the sites of ancient cultures. Traveling is an art. A journey is defined as moving from one place of residence to another for some reason. When a traveler delightfully writes about the sights they saw, the news they heard, their experiences, the special characteristics of the place, and the people who live there, it blossoms into travel literature. Those who helped cultivate this as a distinct genre in Tamil literature are A.K. Chettiar and Somasundaram (Somaley). Father Thani Nayagam has written all of his travel experiences as essays. The purpose of this article is to analyze his travel experience in Japan.

யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர்¹ என்ற உலகப் பார்வை கொண்டவர்கள் நம் தமிழர்கள். ஆகவே மனித வாழ்க்கையில் பயணம் என்பது இனிய அனுபமாகும். புதிய இடங்களுக்குச் செல்வதிலும் புது மக்களைக் காண்பதிலும், பழைய பண்பாடுகளின் நிலைக் களங்களைப் பார்வையிடு வதிலும் அளவற்ற இன்பத்தைப் பெறுகின்றனார் பிரயாணஞ் செய்வது ஒரு கலை. வாழும் இடத்திலிருந்து மற்றொரு இடத்திற்கு ஏதாவது காரணம் பற்றிச் செல்லுதல் பயணம் ஆகும். பயணம் சென்ற ஒருவர், தான் சென்ற இடத்தில் பார்த்தவை, கேட்ட செய்திகள், அனுபவங்கள், அதன் சிறப்பியல்பு, அங்கு வாழ்வோர் போன்றவற்றைச் சுவையாக எழுதும்போது அது பயண இலக்கியமாக மலர்கிறது. தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் இதனைத் தனித்துறையாக வளர்க்க உதவியவர்கள் ஏ.கே. செட்டியாரும், சோமலெயும் ஆவார்கள்.   தனிநாயகம் அடிகளார் தனது பயண அனுபவங்கள் அனைத்தும் கட்டுரைகளாக எழுதியுள்ளார்.  இவ்வாறு அவரின் ஜப்பானிய பயண அனுபவத்தை ஆய்வதே இக் கட்டுரையின் நோக்கமாகும்.
