Abstract

This study investigates the references to women's games (Magalir Vilaiyaattu) found within the Thiruvasagam, a revered work of Shaivite devotional literature composed by Manikkavasagar. Ancient Tamil literature, tracing back to the Sangam period, highlights the enduring practice of worship and recreation. Thiruvasagam, as part of the twelve Thirumurais (holy anthologies), not only details the nature of Shiva worship but also incorporates a significant number of references to traditional games. Games have been a fundamental form of recreation for the people of the Tamil land from the Sangam era to the present day. Manikkavasagar skillfully adopted the format of folk game songs to express profound religious fervor and deep emotional connection to the divine. This paper aims to identify the specific women's games mentioned in Manikkavasagar's hymns, demonstrate their continuity and relevance in popular culture even today, and analyze the spiritual and cultural benefits derived by the people through the medium of these playful expressions of devotion. The analysis reveals how Manikkavasagar uses the joyful activities of women to express his own ecstatic, personal experience of divine realization.
