Myth in Jeyakanthan's Short Story 'Agni Pravesam'

Abstract

After the introduction of 'Comparative Literature' in the Western literary world, various new changes occurred in the research approach. One of these is approaching literature from the perspective of other disciplines. That is, acquiring knowledge from fields like Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, and Mythology and using them to analyze and interpret literary works. As a result, various approaches like the Sociological approach, Psychoanalytic approach, and Mythological approach have emerged and are being adopted by critics. In Tamil literature too, the trend of analyzing literature by following such approaches is now widely seen. In this context, this article aims to examine the myth present in Jeyakanthan's story, Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal (A Few People at Certain Times).

Furthermore, this article also analyzes how the myth about Ahalya from the story Agni Pravesam (Entry by Fire), which is part of the collection Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal, has been employed.

மேலைர இலக்கிய உலகில் ‘ஒப்பிலக்கியம்’ அறிமுகமான பிறகு ஆய்வுப் போக்கில் பல்வேறு புதிய மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்பட்டன. அவற்றுள் ஒன்று இலக்கியத்தைப் பிறதுறை நோக்கோடு அணுகுவதாகும். அதாவது சமூகவியல், உளவியல், மானுடவியல். தொன்மவியல் போன்ற பிறதுறைகளின் அறிவைப் பெற்று அவற்றின் மூலம் இலக்கியப் படைப்புகளை ஆராய்ந்து விளக்குவதாகும். இதன் விளைவாகச் சமூகவியல் அணுகுமுறை, உளப்பகுப்பாய்வு அணுகுமுறை, தொன்மவியல் அணுகுமுறை எனப் பல்வேறு அணுகுமுறைகள் தோன்றித் திறனாய்வாளர்களால் பின்பற்றப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. தமிழ் இலக்கியத்திலும் இத்தகைய அணுகுமுறைகளைப் பின்பற்றி இலக்கியத்தை ஆராயும் போக்கு இப்பொழுது பரவலாகக் காணப்படுகிறது. அந்த வகையில் ஜெயகாந்தன் அவர்களின் சில நேரங்களில் சில மனிதர்கள் என்ற கதைகளில் கதையில் உள்ள தொன்மத்தை ஆராய்வதாக இக்கட்டுரை அமைகிறது.

மேலும் சில நேரங்களில் சில மனிதர்களில் என்னும் கதையில் அக்னி பிரவேசம் என்ற கதையில் உள்ள அகலிகை பற்றிய தொன்மம் கையாளப்பட்டு வந்துள்ளதையும் ஆராய்வதாக இக்கட்டுரை அமைந்துள்ளது.
