Sneezing is a defensive reflex action that occurs naturally in the human body. It generally serves to expel dust, allergens, or infectious pathogens entering the respiratory tract. However, the modern medical community has recently revealed a surprising connection between sneezing, sexual ideation, and orgasm.
A key finding of this study is that this peculiar physiological phenomenon was intricately described by Thiruvalluvar in the masterpiece of Tamil literature, the Thirukkural, approximately two thousand years ago. Specifically, in the Kamathupal (Book of Love), Valluvar explains how sneezing functions as a mechanism within the context of sexual arousal, romantic memories, and oodal (sulking or lovers' tiff) between lovers.
This research paper compares the neurological studies conducted by Mahmood F. Bhutta and Harold Maxwell in 2008 with five couplets regarding sneezing found in the Thirukkural, thereby examining the scientific depth of this ancient literature through a neurological lens. Aspects such as the mechanics of sneezing, the Trigeminal nerve, the chemical Neuromedin B, and the cross-wiring of the Autonomic Nervous System are analyzed in detail.
