The Semiotics of Eyes and Ethics of Life in Thirukkural: An Analytical Evaluation

Abstract

In the landscape of Tamil literature, eyes are constructed not merely as visual sensory organs but as the fountainhead of human emotions, symbols of virtue (Aram), and tools of political strategy. Specifically, in the universal code of ethics, the Thirukkural, Thiruvalluvar has utilized the language of the eyes with great subtlety. This article analyzes how eyes are handled both symbolically and through physical manifestations (Meippattiyal) in the sections of 'Kannottam' (Benignity), 'Ottradal' (Espionage), and 'Kamathuppal' (The Canto of Love) within the Thirukkural. Against the backdrop of Sangam literature and with the aid of Tholkappiyar's theories on Meippattiyal, this research extensively reveals the nine emotions (Navarasas) expressed through the eyes and the internal (Akam) and external (Puram) life values they signify. Furthermore, the article explores scientific perspectives on eyes in Siddha medicine and the contemporary vital virtue of eye donation, connecting them with the ethical framework of Valluvar.
