Abstract

Feminist thoughts have emerged as a strong undercurrent in the modern Tamil poetic tradition. In this developmental trend, Malathi Maitri’s contribution is noteworthy. Her poems do not portray women merely as objects or silent bodies; rather, they present them as beings with the capacity to think, the power to resist, and as identities that define their own existence. Focusing on Malathi Maitri's poems, this article analyzes the nature of female identity expressed within them. Standing at the intersection of a woman's inner and outer worlds, her poems question various social, cultural, and political structures. Specifically, a woman's existence as defined by patriarchal thoughts, her body, emotions, and relationships are re-read in these poems from a new perspective.

Malathi Maitri’s poems do not merely present the search for a woman's liberation; they also reveal the complexities involved in creating her identity. By examining these poems based on feminist theory, it becomes clear that female identity is not static, but rather a constantly evolving process. This study attempts to demonstrate how Malathi Maitri’s poems contribute to the expansion of feminist thoughts.
