Abstract

Proverbs are concise precepts that encapsulate the long-term experience, beliefs, culture, and values of a society. They are not merely words but a mirror reflecting the lifestyle of the Tamils. Proverbs found in ancient languages with rich literary heritage clearly demonstrate the cultural advancement of those languages. The objective of this paper is to analyze the unique characteristics of proverbs that serve as aids in conveying specific ideas within a social context.

Furthermore, this article explains how proverbs function as a tool for transmitting life values to the next generation. This research also presents evidence-based insights into the evolution of proverbs from Sangam literature to contemporary folk literature, as well as their enduring influence among the common people. Specifically, this study establishes that the role of proverbs is indispensable in imparting social control and moral ethics.
