Abstract

This article explores the police investigation methods, legal procedures, and the socio-economic complexities prevalent in the western districts of Tamil Nadu as depicted in the novel Sembulam, written by lawyer and author R. Murugavel. From a socio-legal perspective, this paper analyzes the investigation following a mysterious death, the legal nuances involved (CrPC 174,176 and IPC 304,304A), and how police slang such as "Visiting Card" and "Puncture" are fictionalized within the narrative.

Furthermore, the study compares the novel's data with real-world issues in the Kongu region, including the "Camp Coolie" system in the garment industry, the dominance of caste associations, and the social psychology behind honor killings. The primary objective of this article is to examine how the novel highlights the gap between the law in the books and the law in practice.
