The Role of Tamil Folk Songs in Teaching Tamil Language and Cultural Values to Singapore Secondary School Students

This study analyzes the role of Tamil folk songs in teaching language skills and cultural values to secondary school students in Singapore. Specifically, it examines how folk songs aid in enhancing the four fundamental language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—while propagating core values such as respect, responsibility, harmony, and empathy. The research confirms that song-based learning increases student engagement and allows them to experience Tamil as a "living language." By integrating folk songs into the classroom, educators can transform learning into a joyful, culturally relevant experience that strengthens students' cultural identity while improving linguistic proficiency.
