Abstract

The individual poems (Thanippadalgal) of the Aasugavi (extempore poet) Kalamegam, who left a significant mark on the Tamil literary world in the late 15th century, serve as primary sources reflecting contemporary historical events and political landscapes.

The objective of this paper is to analyze, through these individual poems, the personality of Saluva Thirumalairayan, who ruled the southern region as a representative of the Vijayanagara Empire. It explores the poetic rivalries and Yamagandam (highly challenging verse-writing) competitions with his court poet, Adhimadhura Kavirayar, alongside the folklore and literary myths surrounding the destruction of Thirumalairayan Pattinam.

In particular, the paper objectively discusses two differing perspectives (the views of M. Arunachalam and other commentators) regarding the relationship between the poet and the king, the nature of royal patronage, and the poet's power to sing curses (Aram Paaduthal). Furthermore, the double entendres (Siledhai) and historical facts embedded in these poems are cross-referenced and explained alongside epigraphical/inscriptional evidence.
