Kurunthogai is one of the texts in Ettuthogai (The Eight Anthologies), a part of Sangam literature. It earned the name Kurunthogai because it consists of poems with short lines. Psychological elements are abundantly found in the poems written by female poets in Kurunthogai. Their poems intricately express the mental emotions and social lives of women. The poems of these female poets serve not merely as literary creations, but also as psychological documents that record the deep emotions of the human mind.
