Abstract

Sangam literature serves as a profound reflection of the Tamil way of life and the harmonious social relationships integrated with nature. In the Mullai landscape poems of the Kuruntokai, flowers are not merely aesthetic objects; rather, they function as markers of time and instruments that signify social transformation. This study elucidates how ancient Tamils approached land and time through a materialist perspective. Adopting the framework of historical materialism, this research analyzes the correlation between specific seasonal phases—Kar Kaalam (rainy season), Kuthir Kaalam (early winter), Ila-venil Kaalam (spring)—and the blooming cycles of flowers. The study particularly highlights how these natural descriptions evolved in tandem with human labor and societal shifts, tracing the transition from hunter-gatherer to agrarian societies. Through an analysis of the nine types of flowers associated with the Mullai landscape in Kuruntokai, this article examines the people’s lifestyle, economic development, and social evolution through the lens of dialectical and historical materialism.
