The Varaha Purana is the twelfth among the eighteen Mahapuranas. This Purana centers around the Varaha avatar, the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The story of the Varaha avatar, who rescued the Earth from the netherworld (Patala), is highly relevant to concepts such as environmental protection, the sanctity of the Earth, and sustainable development.
This research paper deeply examines the environmental concepts found in the Varaha Purana while shedding light on the contributions of the ancient Indian knowledge tradition toward Earth protection and sustainable development. The Varaha Purana refers to the five types of benefits provided by trees as the "Five Mahayajnas" (great sacrifices). Furthermore, this Purana emphasizes the belief that if a person plants five trees, they will not go to hell. This paper also explores how the teachings of the Varaha Purana can provide solutions to modern environmental challenges such as climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss..
