An earthquake is a natural disaster characterized by its unpredictable nature and destructive potential. Although Tamil Nadu is situated in a relatively low-to-moderate earthquake hazard zone, Tamil Wikipedia (2026) records that the Western Ghats region and coastal areas face unique risks. In this context, long before modern scientific instruments, the Tamil people observed natural phenomena and recorded natural calamities through Sangam literature, epics, folklore traditions, and proverbs.
This research paper proposes a multidisciplinary earthquake disaster awareness model by combining Tamil traditional knowledge, literary references, and folklore beliefs with Artificial Intelligence-based Tamil Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies. Consisting of four layers—a Traditional Data Aggregation Layer, a Tamil NLP Analysis Layer, a Scientific Sensor Data Integration Layer, and a Local Language Awareness Output Layer—this model presents traditional wisdom and modern technology not as competing systems, but as complementary ones.
Through an illustrative application example, this paper describes how this model can deliver awareness to the public in their local language with local cultural credibility. Finally, the paper reviews the practical challenges, limitations, and future research directions of this integrated approach.
