Topography of Silappathikaaram - A journey upon journeys (based on ‘Kannakiyaar adichchuvattil’ – ‘Milirkal’ – ‘Kannagi kooyilum, vaikaip peruveliyum’)

Abstract

Topography defines the setting of stories and it is essential to understanding literature. In literature, “Imaginary Topography” refers to constructing a fictional world’s setting, people, and culture through details such as landforms, climate, and natural resources.  Ilango Adigal’s Silappathikaram presents such an imagined Topography through the journeys of Kannagi, Kovalan, and Kavunthiyadigal. Later, three researchers C. Govindarajan, R. Murugavel, and Pavel Bharathi added new dimensions to this footstep-based literature.  Across their interpretations, the actual paths and their descriptions remain crucial. Because landscapes and routes have changed significantly over thousands of years, this article uses literary sources to connect historical travel points, routes, and their main land.
