This paper examines the Garuda Purana not merely as a religious text on death, rebirth, and rituals, but as an influential moral treatise shaping individual ethics and social order. Reinterpreting its core doctrines against contemporary social change, the study highlights how the karmic principle of "reaping what you sow" promotes virtuous behavior, yet risks being misused to legitimize caste hierarchy, inequality, and suffering by birth, while its mandated funeral rites can create financial and psychological strain despite fostering family unity. Using a comparative textual approach with classical Tamil ethical works like the Tirukkural and Naladiyar, the paper identifies tensions between Puranic concepts and modern values of equality, reason, and diversity. It concludes that rather than rejecting ancient scriptures outright, their ethical essence should be responsibly adapted to reconcile traditional heritage with modern social justice and harmony.
