Among the several methods used in Jyotisha (Indian astrology) to determine results, the Ashtakavarga system is distinctive in that it measures, numerically, the result a planet actually delivers in each sign. Drawing on classical Jyotisha texts and Tamil works on Ashtakavarga computation, this document-based study explains why the parals (bindus, the benefic points) given by the planets to the twelve signs are the most reliable determinants of results. The seven planets and the ascendant (Lagna) contribute eight kinds of results to every sign, giving 672 results across the twelve signs, of which 337 are benefic bindus and 335 are inauspicious rekhas. The paper describes the Bhinnashtakavarga, Sarvashtakavarga and Prastharashtakavarga, the Kakshya (eight-fold division of a sign) system, and their use in transit (gochara) analysis. The central argument is that the number of bindus a planet has contributed in a sign, rather than its general dignity such as exaltation or debilitation, is the more precise indicator of the practical result.
