Abstract

The human resources of an organization serve as the fundamental determinant of its sustainable growth and competitive advantage. The principle of "hiring the right person with the right skills for the right job" is the primary tenet of contemporary Human Resource Management (HRM). This concept is not new; it has been extensively discussed in the Thirukkural, an ancient Tamil sociological and management treatise, particularly within its section on "Porutpal" (Wealth/Governance).

Specific couplets in the Thirukkural (such as Kural 515, 517, and 509) provide ethical and practical frameworks for employee selection, merit evaluation, and recruitment processes. These verses emphasize the ability to perform a task based on its specific nature (competence) while stressing the indispensability of character (integrity) and intellectual acumen (wisdom). This approach aims to assess an individual’s holistic suitability, moving beyond mere resumes and psychological testing.

This article analyzes and compares the aforementioned concepts from the Thirukkural with modern HRM selection and recruitment policies. Through this comparative study, it proposes an integrated, ethics-based management model to strengthen an organization’s human capital and foster a sustainable culture for long-term success.
