The Thirukkural, authored by Thiruvalluvar, is an exceptional ethical treatise that serves as a guide for all aspects of human life. It offers profound insights across various fields, including individual morality, politics, economics, and sociology. Specifically, it presents clear principles through numerous couplets on how communication should be integrated into the decision-making process. These verses serve as foundational guidelines for all stages emphasized in modern management theories: data collection, discussion, consensus-building, and implementation.
This study examines how the Thirukkural explains the effectiveness of communication across the three key stages of decision-making:
- Pre-decision (Information gathering)
- Decision-making
- Implementation
For instance, the Kural "Selvathul Selvam Sevichchelvam" emphasizes that "wealth of the ear" (active and attentive listening) is the vital first step toward a sound decision. Similarly, "Nandradi Vaarir Kadaiyenba Seyyaamai" stresses the necessity of consulting with those of great wisdom to avoid harmful actions. Furthermore, the verse "Aattrin Alavu Arindhu Kal" establishes the principle that a decision should only be made after measuring and clearly evaluating information. Thus, the fundamental concepts regarding communication revealed through the Thirukkural are discussed here within the framework of modern decision-making theories..
