Abstract

The Thirukkural offers extensive wisdom on the fundamental elements of management science, such as goal setting, planning, and capital investment decisions. These modern concepts are not merely recent developments of Western models; they were already articulated as ancient Tamil wisdom within the Thirukkural. Based on selected couplets, this study examines the ethical and operational dimensions of these vital practices essential for organizational success.

The Thirukkural emphasizes the importance of clearly defining goals (Kural 948) and the necessity of foresight in planning to achieve them (Kural 461, 878). It urges an understanding of the nature of time and the importance of preparation for upcoming challenges. Regarding decisions on allocating capital and resources, the Thirukkural recommends rigorous evaluation and caution guided by long-term wisdom (Kural 508). It advocates for a thorough investigation into the potential outcomes of an investment, prioritizing sustainable and ethical returns over immediate gains. Furthermore, it notes the importance of safeguarding capital—both human and financial—by fostering teamwork and reliable relationships (Kural 467).

In conclusion, the guidance provided by the Thirukkural is not merely philosophical advice; it is a practical management tool that helps organizations navigate complex environments successfully. Particularly in capital investment decisions, it emphasizes an integrated blend of ethics, prudence, and social responsibility. These timeless concepts provide a robust framework for creating sustainable growth and long-term value in today’s dynamic business world.
