Abstract

Tholkappiyar articulates universal truths regarding life—applicable to all people—within the Kalaviyal section of Porulathikaram, the third part of his grammatical treatise, Tholkappiyam. Kalaviyal depicts the life shared by a hero and a heroine who fall in love, marry, and live in union. Kalavu (secret love) and Karpu (wedded life) constitute the two divisions of Agathinai, which deals with the inner life of the heart. Kalaviyal extensively highlights details concerning the subject matter of Agapporul (inner life) and, specifically, the characteristics of the hero. Kalavu refers to the romantic bond formed between the hero and the heroine in secrecy, unbeknownst to others; in this phase, the hero plays a predominant role. This article examines the hero's virtues as depicted in Tholkappiyam's Kalaviyal, focusing on the specific details that highlight his contributions and character.
