This research paper deeply analyzes the thoughts on nature-based human development expressed in the short stories and poems of Vannadasan (Kalyanji)—one of the premier creators of contemporary modern Tamil literature—from an ecocritical perspective. Vannadasan employs a literary technique that connects Tolkappiyar's Ainthinai (five landscapes) theory and Karupporul (native flora, fauna, and elements) traditions with modern contemporary realism.
Rather than viewing nature as a mere background decoration, he establishes it as a spiritual extension of human emotions and an essential ecological balance. This paper explores how the Thamirabarani River, trees, flowers, and birds serve as driving forces for cultural and internal human development in his works. Furthermore, this paper highlights the creator's ecological warning: how the degradation caused to the Thamirabarani River by modern industrialization and sand mining inflicts deep fractures on human personality and moral values.
