Thiruvalluvar emphasizes through the chapter ‘Seeking the Support of the Great’ (Chapter 45) that it is appropriate to take elders, who excel in experience and wisdom, as one's advisors, guides, and companions. The purpose of this paper is to examine this ethical principle against the background of modern scientific domains, namely Neuroscience and Cognitive Aging. Although the maturation of the human brain faces white matter degeneration, it strengthens experiential knowledge and personality through integrated neural activity of both hemispheres (HAROLD model) and advanced cognitive reappraisal. Drawing upon primary textbooks in the field—Kandel's Principles of Neural Science, Gazzaniga's Cognitive Neuroscience, and Kolb & Whishaw's Fundamentals of Human Neuropsychology—the neuroscientific and psychological foundations of 10 couplets are analyzed in detail here.
