Breaking the Invisible Barrier: Psychological Resistance to Technology Adoption Among Rural Engineering Students
A Theoretical and Case-Based Analysis with Institutional Recommendations

Although modern engineering education relies heavily on advanced digital tools, access alone does not ensure success for rural students, who often experience psychological resistance to new technologies. Rather than a lack of technical capability, this resistance is an emotional and cognitive defense against fear of failure, identity threat, and social judgment. By synthesizing theories of self-efficacy, technology acceptance, technophobia, and impostor syndrome, the paper introduces a "psychological friction layer" that explains how a student's socioeconomic and linguistic background creates anxiety in laboratory environments. Through case studies across multiple engineering disciplines, the authors contrast rural-transitioning students with urban-exposed peers and offer a four-phase institutional roadmap—spanning psychological readiness assessments, low-friction foundation modules, gamified error handling, and full system integration—to help educators transform initial anxiety into long-term technical competence.
