Abstract

Literature often records human experiences, intellectual aspirations, and imaginative projections of the future. In this context, Bharathidasan’s Sanjeevi Parvathathin Saaral is a significant literary work. Published in 1930, the work presents two magical herbs that extend the natural sensory capacities of human beings. One herb enables the listener to hear what people in different parts of the world are saying, while another enables the user to visually perceive events occurring across the world while remaining in the same place. Earlier scholarship has interpreted these imaginative devices in relation to radio and television. This article extends that interpretation into the contemporary technological context by comparing the auditory herb with Speech Recognition and Natural Language Processing and the visual herb with Computer Vision. The combination of the two herbs is further examined in relation to Multimodal Artificial Intelligence. The article does not claim that Bharathidasan historically predicted Artificial Intelligence. Instead, it argues that the sensory-extension imagination in the text can be productively reread through contemporary concepts of information access, information processing, machine perception and multimodal intelligence. The study thus brings together Tamil literary studies, media studies, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Humanities in an interdisciplinary framework.
