Exploring Maternal Uncle Kinship in Classical Tamil Folk Ballads

Abstract

Some customs and elements of society change and shrink over time and in the future, their characteristics will be such that they will appear as a remnant in the events of society in some way or another. This article is a study of how the importance given to maternal uncles in the rituals of life of the folk people of Tamil Nadu, as a remnant of the matrilineal society of ancient Tamils, is recorded in folk songs. In lullabies, the image of maternal uncles, the praise of their bravery, the pride of a sister for the care given to her newborn child by her younger brother, the love of the maternal uncle who guards the place where the child plays, the nature of encouraging the child to attend school, the importance given to the maternal uncle in events such as the ear piercing ceremony, the holy bathing ceremony of a girl child, and the marriage ceremony are highlighted.

சமூகத்தின் சில வழக்கங்கள், கூறுகள் போன்றவை பல காலக் கட்டங்களைக் கடந்து செல்லும் போது அவற்றின் தன்மைகள் மாற்றம் பெற்று சுருங்கிப் போய் வருங்காலத்தில் மிச்ச சொச்சமாக சமூகத்தின் நிகழ்வுகளில் ஏதோ ஒரு வகையில் இலைமறை காயாக வெளிப்படும் இயல்புடையனவாக இருக்கும். பண்டையத் தமிழர்களின் தாய்;வழிச் சமூகத்தின் எச்சமாக இன்று தமிழக நாட்டுப்புற மக்களின் வாழ்வியல் சடங்குகளில் தாய்மாமனுக்குக் கொடுக்கும் முக்கியத்துவம் நாட்டுப்புறப் பாடல்களில் எவ்வாறு பதிவாகியுள்ளன என்பதை ஆய்வதாக இக்கட்டுரை அமைந்துள்ளது. தாலாட்டுப் பாடல்களில் தாய்மாமனின் உருவம், வீரம் போற்றப்படலும் பிறந்த குழந்தைக்குத் தன் உடன்பிறந்தான் செய்த சீர் குறித்து சகோதரி கொள்ளும் பெருமிதமும், குழந்தை விளையாடும் இடத்திற்குப் பந்தலிட்டு பாதுகாக்கும் மாமனின் அன்பும், பள்ளியில் சேர்த்து குழந்தையின் கல்வியை ஊக்குவிக்கும் தன்மையும் காதுகுத்தும் சடங்கு, பெண் குழந்;தையின் பூப்புனித நீராட்டு விழா, திருமணச் சடங்கு போன்ற நிகழ்வுகளில் தாய்மாமனுக்கு அளிக்கும் முக்கியத்துவத்தின் பின்னணி எடுத்துரைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
