Omens in Sangam Literature: A Socio-Cultural and Life-Oriented Study

Abstract

Sangam literature serves as a temporal mirror accurately capturing the lifeways of ancient Tamils. In an era when human life was intricately intertwined with nature, it was a common practice for people to relate environmental changes and the behaviors of animals and birds to their future. Sangam literature identifies this as 'Nimittam' or 'Sakunam'. This article explores the various omens recorded in Sangam literature, their origins, classification, and social impact in detail. Specifically, it uses evidence to explain how omen-related elements—such as birds (Pul), lizards, chameleons (Ondhi), the Unnam tree, dreams, sneezing, and the twitching of body parts—influenced the psychology of heroes, heroines, and warriors. This research highlights how these beliefs were positioned at the intersection of the intellectual maturity and fears of the Sangam people, and how they eventually transformed into folk beliefs over time.
