Food Systems in the Bards' Tradition: A Comprehensive Study of Sangam Aatrupadai Literatures and the Five-fold Landscape Cultural Background

Abstract

Sangam literatures accurately record the lifestyle of Tamils from over two thousand years ago. In particular, the Aatrupadai literatures within the Pathupattu (Ten Idylls) collection describe the journeys of bards—artists suffering in poverty—as they sought generous patrons, detailing the various foods they received during these journeys within a comprehensive socio-economic context. In the tradition of the bards, food was not merely a tool to satiate hunger; it was an expression of the land's identity, the people's hospitality, and social hierarchy. Using works such as Perumbanatrupadai and Sirupanatrupadai as primary data, this study explores in detail the foods provided to bards across the five landscapes (Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neithal, and Palai) and the grand feasts granted to them in royal palaces. The relationship between the land's natural resources and the people's dietary patterns, the barter system, culinary techniques, and food-related terminology are deeply analyzed in this research. Through Aatrupadai songs, it is evident that Sangam-era Tamils lived in harmony with nature and regarded food as medicine and an object of worship.

சங்க இலக்கியங்கள் ஈராயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முற்பட்ட தமிழர்களின் வாழ்வியலைத் துல்லியமாகப் பதிவு செய்துள்ளன. குறிப்பாக, பத்துப்பாட்டு நூல்களில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ள ஆற்றுப்படை இலக்கியங்கள், வறுமையில் வாடிய கலைஞர்களான பாணர்கள், வள்ளல்களைத் தேடிச் செல்லும் பயணத்தையும், அந்தப் பயணத்தின் ஊடாக அவர்கள் பெற்ற உணவுகளையும் விரிவான சமூக-பொருளாதாரப் பின்னணியுடன் விவரிக்கின்றன. பாண்குடி மரபில் உணவு என்பது வெறும் பசி ஆற்றுவதற்கான கருவி மட்டுமல்ல; அது நிலத்தின் அடையாளம், மக்களின் விருந்தோம்பல் பண்பு மற்றும் சமூகப் படிநிலை ஆகியவற்றின் வெளிப்பாடாகும். பெரும்பாணாற்றுப்படை மற்றும் சிறுபாணாற்றுப்படை ஆகிய நூல்களை முதன்மைத் தரவுகளாகக் கொண்டு அமையும் இவ்வாய்வு, குறிஞ்சி, முல்லை, மருதம், நெய்தல், பாலை ஆகிய ஐந்திணை நிலங்களில் பாணர்களுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்ட உணவுகளையும், மன்னர்களின் அரண்மனைகளில் அவர்களுக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்ட விருந்துகளையும் விரிவாக ஆராய்கிறது. நிலத்தின் இயற்கை வளத்திற்கும், மக்களின் உணவு முறைக்கும் இடையிலான தொடர்பு, பண்டமாற்று முறை, உணவைத் தயாரிக்கும் பக்குவம் மற்றும் உணவு தொடர்பான கலைச்சொற்கள் ஆகியவை இவ்வாய்வில் ஆழமாக அலசப்படுகின்றன. சங்க காலத் தமிழர்கள் இயற்கையோடு இயைந்து வாழ்ந்ததையும், உணவை மருந்தாகவும் வழிபாட்டிற்குரிய ஒன்றாகவும் கருதியதையும் ஆற்றுப்படைப் பாடல்கள் வழி அறிய முடிகிறது.
