Abstract

This research paper extensively explores the historical roots, aesthetic elements, and socio-cultural evolution of South India's two great classical dance traditions, Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam. It analyzes how Bharatanatyam, which emerged from Tamil Nadu's temple traditions and the Bhakti movement, and Mohiniyattam, which absorbed Kerala's graceful Lasya tradition and natural beauty, have developed unique identities. Specifically, the Natya Shastra foundations for both dances, the historical challenges of the Devadasi system, 20th-century revivalist efforts, and 21st-century digital technology integration are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the paper provides data and tables regarding the influence of Carnatic music and Sopana Sangeetham, differences in costume and ornamentation, and contemporary awards and educational trends up to the year 2025.
