Narrinai Poems in the Context of Tolkappiyam’s Principles of Kalaviyal: A Comparative Study

Abstract

Literature and grammar serve as the primary evidences for understanding the life values, social structures, and cultural significance of ancient Tamils. In particular, literary traditions play a role equal to inscriptions, coins, and copper plates in reconstructing a nation's history. Regarding the internal life (Aham) of Tamils, 'Kalavu' (pre-marital love) was considered a noble, virtue-based conduct. The objective of this paper is to analyze in detail how the grammatical principles of Kalaviyal (the study of clandestine love) formulated in the Porulathikaram of Tolkappiyam are artistically reflected in Narrinai, a Sangam literary anthology.

This study comparatively examines the four major stages of Kalavu conduct as depicted in Tolkappiyam—Iyarkai Punarchi (natural union), Idanthalaippaadu (meeting at the same place), Paangar Koottam (meeting through a friend/confidant), and Tholiyir Koottam (meeting through the lady-companion)—with the poems of Narrinai. The article analyzes the psychological and social transitions beginning from the lovers' initial union through to its culmination in domestic life (Karpu) with the assistance of the lady-companion. The research findings establish that Sangam poets expressed their imaginative prowess strictly within the grammatical rules laid down by Tolkappiyar and that Narrinai poems flawlessly follow the subtle stages of Kalavu conduct.

பண்டைத் தமிழர்களின் வாழ்வியல் விழுமியங்களையும், சமூகக் கட்டமைப்பையும், பண்பாட்டுத் தார்ப்பரியங்களையும் அறிந்துகொள்வதற்கு இலக்கியங்களும் இலக்கணங்களுமே முதன்மைச் சான்றாதாரங்களாகத் திகழ்கின்றன. குறிப்பாக, ஒரு நாட்டின் வரலாற்றை மீட்டெடுப்பதில் கல்வெட்டுகள், நாணயங்கள் மற்றும் செப்பேடுகளுக்கு இணையாக அந்த நாட்டில் நிலவிய இலக்கிய மரபுகளும் முக்கியக் கருவிகளாக அமைகின்றன. தமிழரின் அகவாழ்வியலைப் பொருத்தமட்டில், 'களவு' என்பது மிக உயரிய, அறநெறி சார்ந்த ஒழுக்கமாகக் கருதப்பட்டது. தொல்காப்பியப் பொருளதிகாரம் வகுத்துள்ள களவியல் இலக்கணக் கோட்பாடுகள், சங்க இலக்கியத் தொகுப்பான நற்றிணையில் எவ்வாறு கலைத்துவத்துடன் பிரதிபலிக்கின்றன என்பதை விரிவாக ஆராய்வதே இக்கட்டுரையின் நோக்கமாகும்.

இவ்வாய்வு, தொல்காப்பியம் காட்டும் களவொழுக்கத்தின் நான்கு முக்கியப் படிநிலைகளான இயற்கைப் புணர்ச்சி, இடந்தலைப்பாடு, பாங்கற் கூட்டம் மற்றும் தோழியிற் கூட்டம் ஆகியவற்றை நற்றிணைப் பாடல்களோடு ஒப்பிட்டு நோக்குகிறது. இயற்கைப் புணர்ச்சியில் தொடங்கும் தலைமக்களின் காதல், தோழியின் துணை கொண்டு திருமண வாழ்வில் (கற்பு) முடிவடையும் வரையிலான உளவியல் மற்றும் சமூக மாற்றங்களை இக்கட்டுரை பகுப்பாய்வு செய்கிறது. ஆய்வு முடிவுகள், சங்க காலப் புலவர்கள் தொல்காப்பியர் வகுத்த இலக்கண விதிகளுக்கு உட்பட்டே தங்களின் கற்பனைத் திறனை வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளனர் என்பதையும், நற்றிணைப் பாடல்கள் களவொழுக்கத்தின் நுட்பமான படிநிலைகளைச் செம்மையாகப் பின்பற்றியுள்ளன என்பதையும் நிறுவுகின்றன.
