In the history of Tamil literature, the genre of Prabandhams—collectively known as Sittrilakkiyagal (Minor Literatures)—attained sublime growth in the post-Sangam period. Specifically, Kalambakam, one of the ninety-six types of Sittrilakkiyagal, is a rich literary form characterized by a blend of various poetic meters, verse types, and structural elements encompassing both Akam (interior/love) and Puram (exterior/heroic) themes.

'Puyavaguppu', which serves as one of the introductory elements of this literary form, is a unique component that extols the heroic prowess, philanthropic nature, and the physical strength of the shoulders (Puyangal) of the protagonist.

This research paper provides a detailed examination of how the Puyavaguppu element is structured within Kalambakam literature. Specifically, this article deeply analyzes the conceptual frameworks of Puyavaguppu in:

• Saivite texts: Thillai Kalambakam, Thiruvamathur Kalambakam, Madurai Kalambakam, Kasi Kalambakam, and Thiruvarunai Kalambakam.
