Abstract

Food is not only a basic necessity of human life but also serves as a cultural identifier for a society. In Tamil civilization, the concept of "Soru" (cooked rice/sustenance) has evolved beyond mere physical nourishment to become a symbol of ethics, hospitality, social cohesion, economic prosperity, and humanitarianism.

Records regarding food and the sharing of food are consistently found from Sangam literature to contemporary works. This research examines the documentation of "food and sustenance" (Oon Soru) in Tamil literature through historical and cultural perspectives. Specifically, it explores the social dimensions of food as presented in Sangam literature, Thirukkural, Silappathikaram, Manimekalai, Bhakti literature, and modern Tamil literature. The study concludes by establishing that Soru serves as a central symbol of Tamil culture and a fundamental emblem of social justice ideologies.
