Abstract

In the tradition of Tamil novels, history is not merely a collection of events; it functions as a document of social memory, a critique of power relations, and a mode of recording identity politics. In this regard, Marupakkam by Ponneelan is an important historical novel. Centered on the Mandaikadu riots, the novel extensively portrays nearly two hundred years of social history in Kanyakumari District. In particular, it records significant historical developments such as the caste system of the erstwhile Travancore State, the Upper Cloth Revolt, the Ayyavazhi movement led by Ayya Vaikundar, the spread of Christianity, the abolition of slavery, and the struggle for the merger of Kanyakumari District with Tamil Nadu. These events are presented in the novel as historical narratives. This article examines and explains their historical significance, fictional representations, and socio-political background.
