From Tolkappiyam onwards, one can trace how Tamil prosody (grammar of poetic composition) has evolved over time. Among the essential elements of verse specified in prosody, Thodai (poetic harmony/rhyme) is one. Edukai Thodai (second-letter rhyming), which stands as one of the primary types of Thodai, serves as a vital element in bestowing acoustic richness to a poem. It highlights the musical and rhythmic beauty of a verse. This research paper explores how this Edukai Thodai, as manifested across metrical foot positions (Sir-Nilai) in the poems of Agananuru, acts as a foundation for earlier prosodic traditions while paving the way for later poetic conventions.
