A Study of Modes of Worship and the Philosophy of Saraṇāgati in the Brahma Purāṇa: A Bhakti-Literature Perspective

This study explores the Brahma Purana through the lens of Bhakti literature, analyzing its various modes of divine worship and the core philosophy of Saranagati (total surrender). By comparing Sanskrit Puranic concepts with the Tamil Bhakti traditions of the Alvars and Nayanmars, the paper argues that devotional practices such as chanting (Nama Japa), meditation (Dhyana), ritual worship (Archana), fasting (Vrata), and pilgrimage (Tirtha Yatra) serve as progressive spiritual steps (sadhana) that naturally culminate in complete self-surrender. Supported by textual evidence from the Brahma Purana, recent Tamil academic books, and fifteen research articles, the study concludes that outward worship rituals and Saranagati are not isolated practices, but rather two sequential phases along a continuous path of spiritual evolution.
