In its historical journey of over two thousand years, Tamil literature has developed various literary genres. Branching into several sub-forms under the two major divisions of traditional and modern literature—such as Sangam literature, didactic literature, epic literature, devotional literature, minor literature (Chittrilakkiyam), and contemporary literature—the category of 'Children's Literature', which focuses on children and adolescents, originated in Tamil at the end of the nineteenth century and grew into a distinct genre during the twentieth century. This article historically analyzes the origin, development, pioneers, journalistic contributions, thematic shifts, and awards associated with children's literature from the era of Tolkappiyar to the present day.
