The Role of Minor Characters in Ettuthokai Literature

In the Ettuthokai anthology of Sangam literature, secondary characters play a crucial role in explicating the nuances of Akam (interior/love) and Puram (exterior/heroic) life. Beyond the key figures like Thozhi, Sevilithai, Paangan, Paanan, Virali, and Parathai, characters such as Kandoor (wayfarers), Nattray (biological mother), Velan (shaman), and Paagan (charioteer) serve as pivotal literary catalysts. This research paper presents an expanded analysis of the structural, socio-psychological, and narrative functions of these secondary characters in Ettuthokai with relevant poetic evidence.
