Abstract

Bharatanatyam is a dynamic classical Indian dance form that continually evolves to reflect shifting social structures, cultural identities, and historical transformations. While often perceived as fixed in heritage, the art form underwent significant reconstruction in the twentieth century as it shifted from traditional hereditary communities into urban, middle-class, and upper-caste spaces. In the contemporary era, Bharatanatyam continues to adapt through innovative bodily expressions, technological integration, interdisciplinary collaborations, group dynamics, and themes centered on social justice and diasporic identities. Adopting an anthropological approach, this study investigates how Bharatanatyam and society mutually influence one another, examining how artists negotiate tradition and innovation while representing issues of caste, gender, class, religion, migration, and national identity through movement, abhinaya (expressional technique), music, costume, and stage design.
