Abstract

This research paper analyzes the socio-economic struggles and working conditions of laborers as depicted in D. Selvaraj’s Sahitya Akademi award-winning novel, Thol (The Skin). Set against the backdrop of the leather tanning industry in the Dindigul region, the study examines the severe physical and mental hardships faced by the workforce, including hazardous exposure to chemicals and lime pits that lead to chronic diseases and mortality. The paper further explores the systemic exploitation inherent in the industry, specifically the bonded labor system (Kothadimai), where debt bondage traps families for generations. It highlights the intersection of class and caste, illustrating how social evils such as untouchability and caste-based discrimination are practiced not only in the workplace but also in educational institutions and public spaces. The study concludes that the novel serves as a realistic documentation of the injustices, poverty, and oppression endured by the marginalized working class under capitalist domination.
