The background structure of the characters in the Natrinai poems from a narratological perspective

Abstract

In the Tamil research field, various studies have evolved and reached significant development. Among them, the theory of narratology is noteworthy. Narratology helps us understand the transformations that occur while narrating an event and the processes that bring about those transformations. Within this theory, the study of characters becomes an essential component. Characters form the core of a narrative and determine its events as well as its outcome. Furthermore, the “background”, which is an important element of narratology, reveals the lives and emotions of these characters. In particular, both the subject and the theme play a crucial role in shaping this background. This research aims to analyse, from a narratological perspective, the background structure of the character - namely the hero (thalaivan), the heroine (thalaivi), and the friend (thozhi)-who appear in the Natrinai poems.

தமிழ் ஆய்வுலகில் பல்வேறு ஆய்வுகள், பரிணாம வளர்ச்சி எட்டி உயர்ந்து வருகின்றன. அவற்றுள் எடுத்துரைப்பியல் கோட்பாடு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கதாகும். ஒரு நிகழ்ச்சியை மொழிப்படுத்தும்  போது நடக்கிற மாற்றங்களையும், அந்த மாற்றங்களை நிகழ்த்துகிற செயல் போக்கினையும் உணர்ந்துக் கொள்ள எடுத்துரைப்பியல் கோட்பாடு பயன்படுகிறது. இக்கோட்பாட்டில் கதை மாந்தர்களைப் பற்றி ஆராய்வது இன்றியமையாத கூறாகும். கதை மாந்தர்கள் கதையின் மையமாக இருந்து நிகழ்வுகளையும் அதன் முடிவையும் தீர்மானிக்கிறார்கள். அதோடு எடுத்துரைப்பியல் கூறுகளுள் முக்கியமானதாக இடம்பெறும் “பின்புலம்” அவர்களின் வாழ்க்கையையும் உணர்வுகளையும் வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது.  குறிப்பாக முதற்பொருள் மற்றும் கருப்பொருள் ஆகிய இரண்டுமே பின்புலத்தை  வடிவமைப்பதில் முக்கிய இடம் பெறுகின்றன.
