Abstract

Tamil culture is a rich and continuous manifestation of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS). This tradition is not merely a specific formula or theory; rather, it exists as a Holistic Worldview and a practical repository of knowledge that applies this perspective to every aspect of life.

This paper explores how the essence of this knowledge tradition manifests, both metaphorically and practically, in three key domains of Tamil identity: literature, rituals, and daily lifestyle.

  • In Literature: Spanning from the Sangam era to the Siddhar songs, the literary objective of this tradition is the balanced development of the Four Purusharthas (human pursuits). This encompasses the subjective goal of Veedu (Moksha/Liberation) alongside the objective goals of Aram (Dharma/Righteousness), Porul (Artha/Wealth), and Inbam (Kama/Pleasure).
  • In Rituals: Ranging from cooking to agriculture, and from art to architecture, there lies an embedded Cognitive System that operates in unison with nature’s cycles (seasons and celestial positions).
  • In Daily Lifestyle: The tradition manifests in areas such as family, social relationships, diet, and healthcare through specific ethics (boundaries/rules) and inner intent (purity/balance).

The ultimate aim of this study is to identify these foundational knowledge forms within Tamil culture and examine how they can provide relevant and sustainable alternatives to the intellectual void and environmental crises faced by modern society.
