Abstract

In the history of modern Tamil literature, Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi (1924–2018) stands as a multifaceted personality. His writing career spans all domains of Tamil literature, including poetry, essays, novels, plays, and screenplays. Specifically, his collection titled 'Kavithai Mazhai' (Poetic Rain) serves as a poetic record of social and political changes spanning 68 years, from 1936 to 2004. This article analyzes the concept of 'Binary Opposition' embedded within Kalaignar's poems from a Structuralist perspective. It explains how themes such as the conflict between monarchy and democracy, new definitions of theism and atheism, the class struggle between wealth and poverty, and gender equality are structured as opposing positions. Furthermore, this article examines, with detailed data, how he transformed elements of nature (moon, wind, sea) into symbols of liberation during his time in prison, and how Dravidian ideology is deeply embedded in his poetic language.
