Ancient Tamil literatures are not merely creative works of imaginative elegance and linguistic beauty; they are repositories of knowledge that proclaim the profound scientific expertise of the Tamils of that era. This study explores in detail how, over two thousand years ago, Tamils possessed an understanding of biological evolution, astrophysics, geological techniques, advanced medicine, and metallurgical technology that parallels contemporary scientific laws.
Specifically, Tolkappiyar’s classification of living beings serves as a precursor to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. The Five Elements Theory (Aimperumbhutam) explains the origin of the universe through atomism. Furthermore, evidence unearthed from archaeological sites such as Keezhadi and Adichanallur substantiates the technological excellence described in literature. By integrating literary evidence with archaeological data, this article establishes the ancient scientific tradition of Tamils within a global context.
