The Lifestyle of Devarayaneri Narikuravars

Abstract

This research article, titled "The Lifestyle of Devarayaneri Narikuravars," explores the socio-cultural and economic conditions of the Narikuravar community residing in the Devarayaneri colony near Tiruchirappalli. Despite the advancements of modern civilization, this community maintains unique traditional practices while gradually adapting to new social norms. The study examines various aspects of their daily lives, including their primary occupations—hunting and honey collection for men, and bead-making and selling for women. It details their dietary habits, distinctive traditional attire, and the transition from nomadic tents to government-provided housing facilities equipped with electricity and water. Furthermore, the paper analyzes their family structures, the status of women and children, educational challenges, and their unique "life cycle" governed by seasonal migrations to temple festivals for trade. The research concludes that while the community remains educationally and economically underdeveloped, government interventions and internal social shifts are slowly influencing their traditional way of life.
