During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Tamil literature witnessed the introduction of several new literary genres. Notably, prose literature, influenced by Western literary traditions, started to develop. Within this emerging domain, the travelogue genre stands out prominently. Commencing in the latter part of the nineteenth century, travelogues focusing on India began to appear across the majority of Indian languages. The travel writings of S. Ramakrishnan, particularly Desanthiri, Ilakkatra Payani, and Aathalinaal, occupy a distinctive place in contemporary Tamil literature. These works are not merely records of journeys across India; rather, they represent a creative fusion of travel experience and literary expression. Ramakrishnan transforms his encounters with landscapes, people, and cultures into richly textured narratives that often transcend the boundaries of conventional travel writing. In Desanthiri, Ilakkatra Payani, and Athalinaal, the author’s narrative voice reflects a deep engagement with memory, identity, and cultural diversity. This study aims to examine the nature of the fictional language style in these travel works, focusing on how narrative techniques, linguistic creativity, and imaginative elements contribute to their literary significance.
