In the history of Tamil literature, Akam (the interior landscape) is not merely a depiction of romantic life; it is an expression of the deep emotional struggles of the human mind. While romantic life has been held in high esteem from Sangam literature through the Tirukkural, the social factor known as Alar (public rumor/scandal) reveals the challenges such relationships face in the eyes of society.
This article focuses on the chapter "Alar Arivuruthal" (Announcing the Rumor - Chapter 115) within the Inbathupal (Book of Love) of the Tirukkural. It provides a detailed analysis of the connection between Sangam literary traditions and Valluvar's innovative psychological perspective. This study establishes how Thiruvalluvar approaches the spreading of rumors regarding the secret love (Kalavu) of the hero and heroine from a positive standpoint.
Specifically, this research analyzes:
- The grammatical definitions of the terms Alar, Ambal, and Gowvai.
- The tradition of Varaivu Kadathal (urging for marriage) as formulated by Tolkappiyar.
- The unique metaphors employed by Valluvar.
Ultimately, it is proven that Alar serves not as a social barrier, but as a catalyst for marriage (Varaivu) and a nutrient that fosters the growth of love..
