Folk deity worship holds a unique place in the traditional spiritual heritage of Tamil society. It is distinct from mainstream (major deity) worship and is directly intertwined with people's daily lives, agriculture, natural environment, health, security, and social beliefs. Folk deities are often worshipped at the village, tribal, or family level. The offerings, sacrifices, and rituals found in these traditions reflect the economic structure and cultural identity of the society.
In particular, millets such as foxtail millet (thinai), pearl millet (kambu), kodo millet (varagu), little millet (samai), and finger millet (kezhvaragu) serve as core elements of these rituals. This study examines the fundamental nature of folk deity worship from an anthropological and socio-ecological perspective, exploring how millets function as symbols of prosperity and expressions of social memory. The primary objective of this research is to illustrate how the traditional food systems, agriculture, and spiritual world of Tamil society are interconnected.
