If you ask the common people of Tamil Nadu to name a few Siddhas, the first name they mention will likely be Pattinathadigal. To that extent, his name holds immense renown among the public. Among all the Siddhas, none have sung about impermanence and spirituality as extensively as he did. Pattinathadigal brilliantly ascended from ordinary human devotion (bhakti) to the ultimate state of a Siddha. The environment is the driving force behind the actions of the mind. Similarly, the environment plays a pivotal role in awakening spirituality as well, and Pattinathar was no exception to this rule. It can be said that this environment is precisely what brought out the latent spiritual consciousness buried within him. Even though he was a highly successful merchant, it was his environment and mind that led him to embrace asceticism.
