Indigenous Counselling and Mental Health Concepts in Sangam Akam Literature: Development of the Sangam Indigenous Counselling Model (SICM)

The increasing prevalence of adolescent mental health challenges underscores the need for culturally responsive counselling approaches informed by indigenous knowledge systems. While contemporary counselling psychology has largely evolved within Western theoretical traditions, Sangam Akam literature preserves culturally grounded perspectives on emotional regulation, resilience, interpersonal relationships, and social support that remain relevant to contemporary practice. This integrative review examines indigenous counselling and mental health concepts across the five major Sangam Akam anthologies—Kurunthogai, Natrinai, Akananuru, Ainkurunuru, and Kalithogai. Guided by Indigenous Psychology and contemporary counselling theories, thematic synthesis identified six interrelated psychological constructs: emotion regulation, grief and loss, hope, resilience, identity development, and social connectedness. The review further revealed indigenous helping processes embodied by the Thozhi, Annai, Sevili, Vayil, family, and community, which collectively promote emotional adaptation and psychosocial well-being. These findings informed the development of the Sangam Indigenous Counselling Model (SICM), a culturally grounded conceptual framework that integrates indigenous Tamil counselling wisdom with contemporary counselling psychology. Rather than replacing established counselling theories, the SICM complements them by offering a culturally responsive perspective for adolescent counselling and provides a foundation for future empirical research in indigenous psychology..
