Thoughts on Education in Thiruvalluvar Kaaviyam

Abstract

Tiruvaḷḷuvar kāviyam is a unique Tamil poem of the twentieth century. It was composed by Coimbatore scholar A. Krishnasamy Naidu. The author's fictional kāviyam Thandiyalangaram also contains elements of kāviyam. In such a society, there should be separate educational institutions for men and women. Academic learning alone is insufficient; students must also acquire proficiency in various arts. Thiruvalluvar’s epic embodies the vision that both genders should excel by engaging in diverse forms of training—such as agriculture, vocational skills, physical exercise, *asanas* (yoga postures), martial arts, spinning, and arithmetic. The objective of this article is to highlight these educational ideals.
